Skyrim Gameplay Footage
- Updated: 21st Sep, 2011
Skyrim’s gameplay was unveiled at E3 earlier this year. I was lucky enough to see the demo in action but having been sorely let down by Oblivion’s levelling system whereby as soon as you get the amazing Jade armour every bloody bandit and his dog has it as well, I’ve been reserving judgement.
Having into the levelling in Skyrim, I’m very hopeful that Bethesda have learned the lessons from Oblivion and made this game into the epic rise to power that we all want from RPGs.
When Oblivion first came out back in 2006 I had a bit of a rant about the PC interface. Based on an interview that Todd Harris did for the Bethsoft forums, looks like the Skyrim PC interface will be much the same as the console version.
As far as UI, it visually looks the same across the platforms, but the controls are entirely different. There’s also a lot of “power user” stuff we do with the keyboard from how favorites work, to quick saves, and more that is similar to what we’ve done before in that area. We’re packing a lot of info on the screen and the whole interface is much less ‘look at giant fonts!’ than, say, Oblivion. The PC version also gets higher res textures, larger render modes, and a bunch of other effects you can scale up if your machine is a beast. Last but most important, is the Creation Kit we’ll be releasing for the PC. Modding the game and making it your own is very important to us and our fans, so we’re going to keep doing whatever we can in that area.

Sad for me, because I find console interfaces incredibly frustrating and limited but I guess this is the way the market goes these days. At least they’ve put a lot of work into this one – it looks simply astounding. I might just buy one of those PC wireless adaptors for my Xbox controller because it will be freaking sweet on my PC. Can’t wait to get hands-on with Skyrim at the Eurogamer Expo tomorrow. Got anything in particular you guys want me to look at?
